Biography
Who am I?
My name is Laura Bennett and I am Chief Embracer and Co-Founder of Embrace Pet Insurance. I am an actuary with a degree in mathematics and have worked in insurance for over 16 years. Along with running Embrace, I also sneak in the time to write this blog, which is a bit of an addiction of mine.
What is Embrace Pet Insurance?
Embrace is an insurance program manager that designs, sells, and manages pet health insurance policies for cats and dogs. We provide flexible health insurance products, removing the need to choose between necessary, but costly, medical care versus the life of a much-loved family pet.
My Background and Education
I grew up in England and Scotland, the daughter of a Royal Navy submariner father and an entrepreneurial mother. We emigrated as a family to Canada when I was sixteen and I moved to the US for graduate school and have been here ever since enjoying the land of opportunity and entrepreneurship.
Prior to Embrace, I worked for over twelve years in Toronto, Canada and Dublin, Ireland in many different roles all for one company, Canada Life. I was lucky enough to have great mentors and positions that kept me challenged. Just when I thought I knew what I was doing, I'd be on to the next thing.
My undergrad degree is a BSc in Pure Mathematics from the University of Western Ontario. While I was working, I became an actuary and I also hold the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. As if that isn't enough, I finished off with an MBA focused on Strategic and Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Wharton was the best gift I ever gave myself and I made the most of it by participating in everything I could. You can check out the daily diary of my Wharton experience.
My Family and Other Interests
I am married to John and we have two daughters, Ellie and Erin. They both teach us something new about ourselves every day and makes us laugh all the time. We love to travel and I have visited many different places such as Australia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, Kuwait, Greece, Thailand, and Kenya. Before our MBAs, John and I went on a 10-week backpacking trip to Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile, which was an amazing experience. I’m a foodie - I delight in good food, which John is very good at cooking - lucky for me.
What About This Blog?
I am on a mission to change the flighty image of pet insurance in the US. Enough of the poor products and the disappointing customer experiences. Pet parents won't stand for it any more. This blog is my way of showing that pet insurance can be real, can be helpful, and can be interesting - yes, even interesting!
