We had many different types of dogs while I was growing up but it turns out we didn't have a Shih Tzu. I thought we did when I started writing this until I remembered it was a Lhasa Apso instead - I'm always getting them confused! (hopeless, I know)
I picked Shih Tzu's to focus on today because they do have more than their fair share of eye problems (the health focus this month). They often get Distichiasis, which is where the eye lashes grow inappropriately so that they poke the eyeball and cause infections or at worse, blindness.
I checked out the Shih Tzu's breed profile on the Embrace website and found this endearing description:
Once the prized lap dog of Chinese emperors, the Shih Tzu doesn't see any reason to accept the slightest reduction in status. But his assumption that the world revolves around him rarely comes with arrogance or aggressiveness. The Shih Tzu is, somewhat inexplicably given his willingness to be spoiled, one of the sweetest of all toy dog breeds and one of the most popular, too.
Shih Tzu's do have the usual small dog genetic conditions though too, plus the eye conditions:
Do you have fun with your Shih Tzu and have you come across any of these health issues?
