I'm not very familiar with French Bulldogs, never having met one, but according to our breed experts, French Bulldogs are one of the best city dwellers around (along with English Mastiffs - now wouldn't they be a funny pair?!). Reasonably quiet and requiring relatively little in the way of exercise, a French Bulldog can worm his way into your heart and your apartment with the flick of one of his distinctive fruit-bat ears.
So, since I am totally uneducated about Frenchies, I did what everyone does when they are researching a new breed - I looked up which celebrities have French Bulldogs (go on, admit it, you do too) and unsurprisingly, there are quite a few famous Frenchies.
Christina Ricci and Ramon
- Leonardo Di Caprio and Django
- Reese Witherspoon and Coco
- And blogging superstars Francesca and Sharkey, Martha Stewart's celebrity pups
(thank you to HoundBound for the celeb info)
One thing that did surprise me is how much bigger they are than I'd expected (up to 28 lbs), as I'm always confusing them with what seem to be smaller Boston Terriers. (I know, I know! Terrible faux paw in the dog world)
Frenchies can suffer from a number of health issues, often related to their bow legs and squashed nose. Spine malformations, a number of airway and breathing difficulties, heat and exercise intolerance, reproductive problems (the norm rather than the exception), and a number of allergies and skin problems are more common than for other breeds so you should watch out for them carefully.
If you bring in a French Bulldog as part of your family, make sure to watch out for these health issues and prevent them from overheating. For more about French Bulldogs and their health issues, check out our French Bulldog Breed Profile.
How about your Frenchies - have you had any particular health issues with them? Any funny Frenchie things they do?
