I received this question the other night from D in Seattle (how come passionate pet parents are up asking good questions in the wee hours of the night?):
I have a rescue shelter cat and I don't know her age. What should I do when buying Embrace pet insurance? Where would I find this on your site? D
Answer :
Hey D, here are the Embrace Pet Insurance Age Guidelines for cats (and dogs) you were looking for:
- Mixed breed cats: up to and including 10 years old
- Purebreed cats: up to and including 8 years old
Most vets can estimate an age within 6 months at younger ages and a year at older ages so Iâd just go with what your vet says for your cat's age (that applies to dogs too). I know that when I adopted Lily, the shelter said she was 18 months but the vet was sure she was much closer to 9 months at the time so they can tell pretty well. We only need your cat or dog's age, not their actual birthdate, unlike other pet insurers, so that helps take out the need for absolute precision.
Hope that helps.
BTW, thanks for prompting us to cover this value-add info in the age section (new detail coming soon). If you have any questions you'd like to Ask Laura about pet insurance, pet health, or anything else on your mind, I'll get an answer for you. I might not know it off the top of my head but I know I can find it out for you.
