A 4 year old rescued Rottweiler, Lula, began limping now and again, and after a short time the pet parents took her to the vet, thinking it was likely a sprain from playing with their other dog. Unfortunately, initial x-rays showed that she had hip dysplasia in the right side and partially torn anterior crucial ligaments (ACL) on both sides. The primary vet prescribed a pain reliever and referred the family to an orthopedic specialist.
A week later, Lula underwent a standard ACL repair on both knees, and was prescribed an additional anti-inflammatory, and a lot of rest. She’ll need some assistance while walking for several weeks, but she began using both rear legs after just about 3 days.
Costs: $3,449 (Cleveland area costs) Initial x-rays and costs accounted for $218, and the specialist’s procedure including the exam, additional x-rays, surgery costs, pins, medications and hospitalization amounted to $3,231.
Reimbursement: $2,695.20 The policy had already had prior claims that met all but $80 of the $200 yearly deductible. The annual maximum was $5,000 plus a co-pay of 20%. Annual premiums were $348.90 (including a 5% multiple pet discount, and a 5% work-perk discount).
The pet parents were very much relieved that they were able to have both sides repaired, which will likely relieve some of the discomfort related to the hip dysplasia. With a few weeks of bed rest and some extra love and attention, Lula will be on the beach this summer with the rest of the surf-hounds.
