Hello and welcome if you are visiting my pet insurance blog for the first time - please check out the Embrace Pet Insurance site to learn, compare and quote a policy for pet insurance.
After the overwhelming response to last week's segment on Jill Rappaport's dog Jack and his treatment for cancer, The Today Show ran another segment on pet insurance specifically (Monday, Apr 9th) called How Far Would You Go for Your Pet?.
It certainly put forward the topic of pet insurance to a willing audience and I'm sure that most US pet insurers heard from many potential policyholders after the segment ran.
So, here's what I would have said on the Today Show if I'd been the reporter:
- Jill paid a total of $x for Jack's cancer treatments (funnily enough, they never mention how much Jill spent on her care but they alluded to $10,000 in the pet insurance segment - that's about right from my experience)
- many people would not be able to afford the kind of care Jill gave Jack (as mentioned in the segment)
- while less than 0.5% of the cats and dogs in the US have pet insurance, around 20% are insured in the UK and more and more people in the US are hearing about pet insurance (even having any type of insurance on the Today Show is unusual don't you think - there must be something happening that drove that interest)
- if you are the kind of person that would do anything for your pet and you would be hard pressed to pay for a large vet bill (and what's "large" being different for everyone), perhaps you should consider pet insurance
- to keep costs down, perhaps consider a high deductible policy ($500 a year)
And to wrap the segment up...
- Just like all insurance, you cannot buy insurance when you need it the most (it's hard to buy auto insurance after you've had your car accident) so don't wait for something bad to happen before you buy pet insurance if you decide it's right for you
What do you think?
