I'm always scanning the internet for what people are saying on pet insurance and came across this insightful article on pet insurance by veterinarian Dr. Shawn Messonnier. He says:
We can do so much for pets now, including just about any test, treatment, or surgical procedure that can be done for humans. But this excellent care does come at a cost. Unfortunately, many people are not willing to pay the bill. According to a recent survey in one of my veterinary journals, the majority of pet owners said they would consider stopping treatment or even opt for euthanasia for their pet if the cost of care was over $1500.
I know that $1500 seems like a lot of money. Yet you can easily spend this much just on an emergency weekend visit to the local veterinary clinic. Now consider treatment costs for an ongoing condition. It is estimated that 60% of dogs and cats will develop some sort of cancer in their lives, with the cost of care for these pets ranging from $3000 to over $10,000! Most pet owners would not be able to afford this care, even if they would gladly choose the optimal level of care for their pets. For this reason, I say insurance is an inexpensive “must-have” for most pet owners.
