A continuation of our series on the genetic conditions a particular breed might be more prone to than a comparable mixed breed dogs or cat.
Dachshunds
- Bloat: also known as torsion, gastric torsion, and gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a condition where the stomach is distorted, trapping gases
- Epilepsy: seizure disorder
- Hypothyroidism: insufficient production of thyroid hormone
- Intervertebral Disc Disease: disc degeneration leading to rupture
- Cushings Disease: overproduction of a hormone called cortisol, which is used by the body for the fight or flight response. It is also called hyperadrenocorticism
- Oronasal Fistulas: cleft palate
- Pattern Baldness: hair loss
- Retained Deciduous Teeth: retained "baby" teeth
- Neuronal Ceroid-lipofuscinosis: a degenerative brain disease aka Batten Disease
- Developmental Bone and Joint Disease:
Because a breed is more prone to a disease does not mean that any particular dog will get the disease but is more prone overall than a mixed breed dog.
Embrace Pet Insurance covers these conditions provided you do not know if your Dachshunds has any of them or you've seen symptoms before you get your policy.
When choosing your pet insurer, check to see if the companies you are considering covers these conditions because few others apart from Embrace Pet Insurance do.
