This is a first in a series about the genetic conditions a particular breed might be more prone to than a comparable mixed breed dogs or cat.
Labrador Retriever
Arthritis: disease that causes inflammation and pain in the joints- Hip dysplasia: painful condition where the leg bones and hip sockets do not fit well together, causing pain and lameness
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy: degeneration of the retina in the eye which progresses to blindness
- Neuronal Ceroid-lipofuscinosis: a degenerative brain disease
- Tricuspid dysplasia: malformed heart valves
- Developmental Bone and Joint Disease
- Retinal dysplasia: abnormal development of the retina in the eye
- Allergic Dermatitis: skin allergies
- Otitis Externa: ear infections
- Hepatitis: inflammation of the liver
- Laryngeal Paralysis: narrowing of the larynx, constricting the ability to breath
Because a breed is more prone to a disease does not mean that any particular dog will get the disease but is more prone overall than a mixed breed dog.
Embrace Pet Insurance covers these conditions provided you do not know if your Labrador has any of them or you've seen symptoms before you get your policy.
When choosing your pet insurer, check to see if the companies you are considering covers these conditions because few others apart from Embrace Pet Insurance do.
